When
buying joist
hangers
for the
floor framing
of your
new home,
I recommend
three things.
First, buy
the hangers
that nail
to the top
or wrap
over the
top of the
supporting
beam that
you are
nailing
to. This
type of
hanger is
stronger
and if installed
correctly
has little
chance of
movement
when home
is complete
and house
begins its
settling/drying
process.
Second,
use the
proper nails
recommended
for joist
hangers.
They are
a thicker
diameter
than the
16d or 8d
nail that
your carpenter
carries
around in
his pouches.
The nailing
holes on
the joist
hanger are
punched
for the
oversized
nail for
strength.
If this
nail is
not used,
sloppiness
could occur
over time,
creating
a squeak
several
years after
the home
is lived
in.
Third,
to add additional
protection
against
floor squeaks,
add a dab
of sub flooring
glue to
the pocket
of the joist
hanger where
the floor
joist will
be held.
See photo.
We use
"Paslode"
1 1/4"
joist hanger
nails for
our air
gun that
is specially
made just
for nailing
joist hangers.
The gun
is a big
time saver
along with
saving bruised
fingers
from trying
to hold
the small
1 1/4"
nails.
We purchase
ours at
Pioneer
Lumber (219)926-1191
in Chesterton.
