Raise exterior doors 3/4, Make room for door mats

When installing your front, garage entry or other swinging exterior doors of your new home, I recommend nailing and gluing a 1x8, cut and ripped to fit, to the floor before installing your new door. Then install the door on top of the cut 1x8. Use sub flooring glue between the 1x8 and the floor and again between the 1x8 and the bottom of the threshold. The width of the 1x8 should not exceed the width of the threshold and the 1x8 should fit directly under the threshold when installed.

Usually all steel, wood or fiberglass entry doors will need a 1x8 and hinged patio doors from a window manufacturer will not.

Doing the above, will raise up the door enough to clear doormats and carpets used to wipe your feet on when someone enters the door.

In most new homes these days ceramic tile or hardwood floors are installed at the entry ways of homes for cleaning purposes. Due to the thickness of the tiles underlayment and the tile itself, the combined thickness will reach 3/4 to one inch. Which will leave little room between the bottom of the door and the new floor for a floor mat when the door is opened.

I know we have all gone into a new home and when the front door is opened it catches on the floor mat used to wipe your shoes or the mat is placed away from the door because the homeowner is tired of fixing the mat every time someone comes in the door.

There are always a few exceptions to the above, especially with hinged patio doors. Check with your sales rep where you are buying your doors.
